RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel was successful in her bid for a fourth term in office

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel was successful in her bid for a fourth term in office, overcoming a challenge from GOP lawyer Harmeet Dhillon in the wake of Republicans' lacklustre performance in the midterms. Despite a contentious battle, McDaniel ultimately secured a comfortable victory and quashed the efforts of the MAGA-wing of the party to bring about an upheaval.

“We heard you, grassroots,” McDaniel said after her election in a nod to those backing Dhillon’s candidacy. “We know. We heard Harmeet. We heard Mike Lindell. But with us united and all of us going together, the Democrats are going to hear us in 2024 when we take back the White House and the Senate.”

McDaniel will lead the party through the next presidential election. Her election comes as the GOP finds itself locked in an internal battle, in part over the role of former President Donald Trump within the party and the legacy of his movement.

Trump loomed large over the proceedings Friday, though the contest was a rare dispute that did not hinge solely on electors’ enthusiasm – or lack thereof – for the former president, who in November announced his 2024 bid for the White House.

Both McDaniel and Dhillon have deep ties to Trump, something that has in particular been an issue for McDaniel as many Republicans openly reevaluate Trump’s role in the GOP heading into the 2024 race in the wake of the midterms.

Trump in 2016 tapped McDaniel to lead the RNC, a role that calls for organizing fundraising, coordinating the party’s message at a national level and arbitrating internal disputes, among other things. He has in general been loyal to her – something that has gone both ways. McDaniel defended Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol and more recently has avoided explicitly placing blame at his feet for Republicans’ underwhelming midterm performance.

His appearances have the feel of a campaign or reelection event, as if he is already trying to win a second term.

The atmosphere was convivial at the union hall in Virginia's blue North as President Joe Biden spoke, emphasizing the economic headway made in his first two years in power and cautioning against the "mayhem and devastation" threatened by the House Republicans. He informed the steamfitters union gathering in Springfield that the Republican camp had campaigned on inflation in the 2022 midterm elections, to no avail. "They didn't mention that they intended to worsen the situation if they won," Biden said, drawing a ripple of laughter.

Although he hasn't officially declared his intention to stand for a second term in office, Biden has effectively begun his election campaign, touting his successes and accusing Republicans of jeopardizing the economy and the welfare of employees. This was backed up by favorable figures released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis on Thursday, which revealed an increase in the economy's growth.

"Since I was elected," Biden started, exhibiting some irritation with the notion of a bad economy despite the existing expansion and healthy employment figures, "I have been informed that we were going to experience a recession. Fortunately, it appears they were incorrect." He then noted some other positive figures, such as the lowest unemployment rate in half a century, an all-time high of jobs created in the initial two years of a president's tenure, as well as the most successful two-year period for small business formation ever.

President Biden announced the formation of the "Invest in America" cabinet, made up of the heads of Commerce, Labor, Transportation, Treasury, Energy, Health and Human Services, the EPA, Mitch Landrieu and John Podesta. This team will be responsible for ensuring the effective enactment of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, according to the White House. "We've gotten it all passed," Biden stated regarding the infrastructure bill and the Inflation Reduction Act.
